Choosing the right grass is the single biggest decision for a healthy, low-stress lawn in the Myrtle Beach area and the Grand Strand. Our sandy, acidic coastal soil, salt air and hot, humid summers reward warm-season grasses and punish the wrong choice. Here are the four you’ll see most on the South Carolina coast.
Centipede — the Grand Strand favorite
Low-maintenance, thrives in acidic sandy soil, and needs very little fertilizer. It grows slowly (less mowing) and has a light-green color. It’s the most common lawn grass on the SC coast for good reason — but it hates heavy foot traffic and over-fertilizing.
St. Augustine — shade and salt tolerant
Coarse-bladed, loves humid coastal conditions, and handles shade and salt better than most — a great pick for lots near the water or under live oaks. It needs more water and regular mowing to look its best.
Bermuda — full sun and durability
Drought- and traffic-tolerant and fast-growing, Bermuda is ideal for sunny, active yards. The trade-off is more frequent mowing and feeding to keep it dense and weed-free.
Zoysia — dense and manicured
Slow-growing, dense, and handles some shade; popular in newer Grand Strand subdivisions for its carpet-like look. It’s more forgiving than Bermuda but slower to recover from damage.
